Subtle Exuberance

Verse of the Day:

"Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me."

Psalm 103:2

This is such an appropriate verse for me
today, because of what happened last night
while helping out with youth.

I don't think I've ever volunteered with youth
that have been so open with their lives before.
Even the stuff most adults won't mention to their
peers, these kids will talk about with us.

Some of their problems are the trivial
teen dramas that seem to come and go
so frequently their attitudes about life and God
seem to teeter just as frequently.
Talking to them makes me remember
why I didn't want to be a social worker, not
because I can't listen with patience,
but because they can't accept answers about life
that are different from their teen spectrum.
Very frustrating for both parties.

Some have serious family problems, which
leads to a downward spiral of depression
and thoughts of "Why am I the only one who suffers?"

One actually admitted to almost "doing something stupid,"
i.e. committing suicide, but a friend's text right before
the time of the act prevented that from happening.

Is that a miracle? I think so.
Even though the student was very
skeptical about it, I think she thought it was
miraculous as well.

Please pray for these students.
They are great kids and
come every week to read the Word
to know more about the Lord,
even though some claim to be unbelievers.

I'm hoping we can put everything
on the table, so that these kids know
that they aren't alone in their troubles.
And that life may have its downs,
but also has its ups.

Baskerville Italic

"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines
the course of your life."
Proverbs 4:23

Lovin' my daily verse emails.

Last night began the first of night of
our VERY in-depth study of 1 John
(of which we read this past summer)
AND the first night of Bible studies
to be held at Andy's house.

Good times.
I think Colby enjoyed being
our new small group mascot.
He's a good dog.

We only read through about 5 verses of Scripture,
but oh boy did we extract some
deep thoughts from them!

Developing imagery through light and darkness...
hosting a television show A LA Bill Maher,
without the self-righteous atheism.

I'm telling you, Andy has a funny facilitator way
that makes him sound like he's about
to take a call from Deb from Milwaukee.

"What's your question, hun?"

Quaggy. I won't say really.

I said it anyway.

Haha.

And as always, I am trying to
focus on what the Lord
is trying to show me.

Another great verse of the day:

...For I am doing something in your own day,
something you wouldn't believe
even if someone
told you about it.
Habakkuk 1:5

Last night's youth group
at 2420 (aka Deon's)
was wrought with discussion
about faith and doubt
and God's timing,

The Safe Haven youth are really blessed to
have Jameson and Brianne
as their leaders.

I'm glad to have them as friends.

Again, even though some things
happen, the Lord makes things right
sometimes slowly, but sometimes so
quickly that you don't even realize that
it's happened already.

Circuit Box? Really?

I've been getting really encouraging
verses from Air.com lately, so I think
I will continue to share them with you.

The Lord is good to those who depend on Him.
To those who search for Him.
Lamentations 3:25

And not to leave you in this verse without context land,
I read on further in the chapter and
was really encouraged.

Even when crazy things happen and
you feel like you've been abandoned,
you won't be forever.

For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever.
Even though He brings grief, he also shows
compassion, because of the greatness
of his unfailing love.
vs. 31-32

And even when you think you
need to be somewhere else,
the Lord will definitely redirect your path
to the direction He wants you to go.

Don't be discouraged.
Take heart.
He will be with you.

I can't keep a straight face...

Two posts in one day? Slow down! Surely you could have waited until tomorrow to devulge more useless information about yourself...

Nah, I just wanted to share some thoughts from Safe Haven today. Some good and sad things happened today.
1) We had a meeting to reiterate the non-trip to Mexico. The tickets are still good until April 2011, so there's that.
2) We moved into the biggest theatre, however they blocked off a lot of the seats, making it hold the same amount of people... interesting.
3) Found out that two of the first people that I met at Safe Haven are transitioning out of the church to other ministries.
4) I caught up on the sermon series about HEAVEN today, since I missed last week (bummer).

Today, Troy focused on heaven on the context of "where did Grandma go?" Did she go to heaven? If she was a believer, heck yes she did!

He then proceeded to describe the heaven from Scripture. A physical place with physical beings with an intermediate cognitive state of mind. Because this heaven isn't going to be permanent, yo.

"You can't get any more physical than a palm branch. Well, maybe a bowling ball."

This quote was in reference to the masses in heaven who were waving palm branches. Catch up yet? No? Sorry. It was also a reference to Plato thinking that all "bodies" were evil and nothing physical can exist in the spirit world...because that would be bad. Sorry, Plato.

What is the present heaven like you ask? According to Troy, and the Bible, the paradise described by Christ in Luke 23:43 and the paradise in Genesis 3...is the same place! A "walled garden".

Other verses referenced: John 14:1-3; Luke 16; 2 Corinthians 5:2,8; Philippians 3; Revelation 21:1; 2 Kings 19:15; and Revelation 2:1-10.

Read up.

P.S. Is it sad that whenever Troy mentioned the "walled garden" I immediately thought of the Olive Garden?
